2007 Region Day

Letters Today. Leaders Tomorrow.
They said it would never happen, but on November 3, 2007, Region VI Day came to Windsor, Ontario. Over 180 Delta Zetas, collegiate and alumnae, crossed the border into Canada and were welcomed with open arms by Omicron Nu Chapter to the Rosemont Golf and Curling Club.

The day began with welcomes from RCC Andrea Henderson, AAD Mella Davies, and Omicron Nu CCD Ange Bernyk. Ange gave us some quick facts about Windsor, remarking upon the overabundance of Tim Horton’s restaurants and the mild weather (after all, Windsor is actually farther south than most of the entire state of Michigan!).

Keynote speaker John Postons, a marriage and family therapist from Essex County, then took the stage to inform us about the current “healthcare epidemic” - our failure to take good care of OURSELVES. John reminded us to “stay grounded”, and showed us how the Delta Zeta creed should be used as a model to keep us focused on the important aspects of life. After all, “it’s not easy doing a life” - we need to “nurture the flame within.”

After lunch and a wonderful Founder’s Day ceremony hosted by Omicron Nu Chapter, Judy Christian announced the Evelyn Adams Costello scholarship winners. This year three women were honored - Jennifer Walker of Epsilon Sigma Chapter received a full scholarship, while Michelle Vargas (Epsilon Sigma) and Julie Goral (Lambda Theta) received partial scholarships.

Next, the Omicron Nu Chapter Association led us in a ceremony to honor the seniors in attendance, and the Metro Detroit Alumnae Chapter presented each senior with a handmade sewing kit nestled in a pink and green fabric box.

Omicron Nu Chapter then paid tribute to Richelle Chumbley, a sister who passed away on October 16. In addition to sharing some heartfelt memories about the sister that left too soon, chapter President Angie Robinet-Tedesco read a poem that Richelle wrote for her new member class right before Initiation.

“Sisterhood confirms the reason we're here today, we'll be there for all of you, anytime, anyway.”

Throughout the day, ON women also sold homemade chocolates in honor of Richelle. Proceeds from the chocolates sale will be used to purchase a brick in her memory at the Delta Zeta Headquarters and Museum in Oxford.

After our breakout workshop sessions, led by alumnae Kim Brothers, Jacque Schafer and Rachel Czech, we reconvened to the address of the day’s featured guest, National Director Diane Stecher. Before informing us of some exciting endeavors that Delta Zeta will be undertaking in 2008, Diane challenged us to “raise the bar” and “commit to Delta Zeta.”

The ever popular “State of the Chapter” addresses were up next, providing us the opportunity to learn about the many accomplishments of our Region VI chapters over the past year. Visit the Great Lakes website for a wrap-up of the State of the Chapter addresses.

As always, the highlight for alumnae came during the awards portion of the program. AAD Mella Davies recognized CCDs Gwen Shick and Tommy Gilpin with this year’s awards - see the next page for much more information about the winners! Andrea Henderson then announced the long list of collegiate award winners, including Outstanding New Member Danya Alawie of Epsilon Sigma chapter and Miss Region VI, Brittany Gauthier of Lambda Theta chapter. See the Great Lakes website for a complete list of collegiate award winners.

The day concluded with the drawing for the Chinese auction winners and the announcement that the 2008 Region Day will be hosted by Xi Psi Chapter at Grand Valley State University. Looking forward to seeing you all in Allendale next November!
