The 2007 Region VI Outstanding Alumna This is an annual award presented to an alumna in Region VI. One who never hesitates to volunteer to help with or to organize a project. One who clearly lives the Delta Zeta creed, giving graciously, not for recognition, but in response to a desire to give back to her sorority. Click to

Congratulations to Gwen Shick, Zeta Nu (Ferris State University) Initiate, for being chosen as the 2007 Region VI Outstanding Alumna Award Winner! Alumnae and collegians have an opportunity to nominate a candidate for this award. Many excellent nominations were received this year but one stood out because it was sent by a chapter and an alumna. Its rather amazing, but not surprising that both alumnae awards are being given to women who are longtime and dedicated volunteers. They have been in the same Delta Zeta leadership position for the same length of time. – 18 years!!! Most folks don’t stay in a paying position that long. Gwendolyn McHugh Shick was initiated into Zeta Nu chapter at Ferris State in 1962. She is married and the mother of 3 children. Has anyone ever seen Gwen when she doesn’t look like she has just stepped out of a beauty shop? That’s because she is a hairdresser. Gwen Shick is an active member of the Grand Rapids Alumnae Chapter. This connection between alumnae and actives has served as a vital supporting link for the women of Xi Psi Chapter at Grand Valley State University. For 18 years as CCD, Gwen has guided and counseled the chapter in matters Delta Zeta and about sisterhood and life. To quote from her nomination: “ Gwen is one of the most dedicated women to Delta Zeta that I have ever come across. She has always been there when we needed her and given the best advice a chapter could ask for. Gwen puts in a lot of time by coming to our chapter meetings every week and meeting with us in between when needed. Without her our chapter would not be able to be what it is today. She has gotten us through things that no one else could (and) has never complained once, but instead asked if she could do any more. She is a great influence to all that go through Delta Zeta and it would be well deserved for her to win the outstanding alumna award.” And she has! Congratulations Gwen!
