The 2007 Lamplighters

The Lamplighter Award, established at State Day, 1981, is designed to acknowledge the member in each chapter who has given that extra bit of spark, devotion, and loyalty to her alumnae chapter as an officer or member.  It is a way of recognizing those hardworking alumnae members who may never hold an Area or National position, but are so invaluable to you in your endeavors as Delta Zeta alumnae.

Congratulations to the 2007 Lamplighter Award recipients, as chosen by their respective Alumnae Chapters.

Alumnae Chapter: Cleveland Eastside
Name of Recipient: Polly Allen Sems
College Chapter: Beta Chi, Wittenberg University

Polly has been an active member of our Alumnae Chapter for several years. She was Secretary in 2003-2004, Vice President in 2004-2005 and Chapter President from 2005-2007. She represented our Chapter as a delegate at the National Convention last summer in Phoenix.

Polly has managed the strip list for the last three years and printed address labels for our mass Fall mailings. She has helped get our newsletter ready for mailing and volunteered her time to help with the annual spring flower sales. She put together our contribution to the Chinese Auction for State Day, 2006, in Youngstown and wrote an original skit for our Founders’ Day Ceremony last October. Since she has joined our Chapter, she has truly committed time and effort to Delta Zeta.

The Cleveland Eastside Alumnae Chapter is proud to award Polly Sems with the 2007 Lamplighter Award.

Alumnae Chapter: Cleveland Westside/Berea
Name of Recipient: Betty Ann Spero
College Chapter: Theta Psi, Ashland University

Betty Ann is our representative to the Alumnae Panhellenic Council in Cleveland, and is a member of their hospitality committee. She is very conscientious about attending the meetings and bringing information back to us, as well as encouraging us to participate in their fundraisers. She is also our liaison to Gamma Alpha Chapter at Baldwin Wallace College, and as such, spends numerous hours on our joint activities --- the biggest being our annual Founder's Day celebration with Gamma Alpha chapter, their mothers, and our alumnae. Betty Ann also organizes our annual ice cream social with Gamma Alpha, as well as our alumnae assistance to the chapter for the Fall tree trimming fundraiser to benefit Genesis House (transitional housing for women and children), and our joint activities as needed and requested by Gamma Alpha Chapter.

Betty Ann is a worthy honoree for the 2007 Lamplighter Award.

Alumnae Chapter: Columbus
Name of Recipient: Annette Marquez
College Chapter: Gamma Xi, New Mexico State University

Our Lamplighter has been actively involved with Delta Zeta on the alumnae level for a number of years since graduating from New Mexico State and relocating to Ohio. She has served as Panhellenic representative for the Columbus Alumnae Chapter and is an active member of the new Delaware Area Alumnae Chapter. She serves as a member of the Theta Chapter advisory board - advising the Vice-President of New Member Education - and assists the chapter by helping with Initiation, formal recruitment, and teaching members new songs. She helped plan the Theta Chapter Executive Board retreat with one of the other advisors, and serves as an “Alum Chum” for new members in both Theta and Alpha Rho Chapters. Annette Marquez has been a devoted sister in so many ways to our area sisters - both collegiate and alumnae - and should be seen as a role model for all Delta Zetas!

The Columbus Alumnae Chapter is most enthusiastic about presenting Annette with the 2007 Lamplighter Award!

Alumnae Chapter: Dayton Area
Name of Recipient: Iris Mirelez
College Chapter: Kappa Iota, Wright State University

Our nominee for the Lamplighter does it all…and ALWAYS does it well! Iris exhibits her loyalty to Delta Zeta in many different roles. She works with the collegiate women of the Kappa Iota Chapter in her position as Wright State University Faculty Advisor and serves as a liaison between collegiate and alumnae members by continually looking for new ways they can come together to grow the bonds of sisterhood.

Iris is always willing and eager to serve the Alumnae Chapter as needed. Her continued outreach to collegians and young alumnae, as well as her positive promotion of alumnae activities, has been vital in the recruitment and retention of new members. She is always looking for ways to attract new members and to retain the members that we have.

In addition, Iris exhibits her devotion to the Alumnae Chapter through extensive planning and preparation for meetings, philanthropy projects, and sisterhood events. She serves as the Vice President of Programming and brings a spark to every meeting with her poems, gifts and her welcoming smile. She has worked diligently to continue the philanthropy efforts of the chapter, and under her leadership, the team for the ACS Breast Cancer Walk exceeded their fundraising goal and was recognized as one of the top 5 teams.

In addition, Iris took on the very daunting task of planning the Alumnae portion of State Day 2007. Her goal was to give more focus to the alumnae members, and get as many alumnae to attend as possible. She planned pre-State Day events and special sessions for the day. She worked diligently to secure speakers and keep the focus on sisterhood. She wanted to make sure that all alumnae in attendance remembered how important Delta Zeta is to them…and for those that have been away she wanted to remind them of the special sisterhood that we all share.

Iris is a constant flame burning for Delta Zeta, striving always to “walk in the light of the flame.” For both collegians and alumnae, Iris truly exemplifies the lifetime commitment to sisterhood and service embodied by Delta Zeta Sorority.

The Dayton Alumnae Chapter is thrilled to present Iris with the 2007 Lamplighter Award!

Alumnae Chapter: Delaware Area
Name of Recipient: Jackie Lapp-Lee
College Chapter: Zeta Kappa, Ohio Northern University

The Delaware Area Alumnae Chapter’s recipient has been instrumental in the development of the new Delaware Area Alumnae Chapter. Not only is she an active alumna member of our chapter, she has helped our chapter establish a connection with the Zeta Kappa Chapter at Ohio Northern University. She has served as Zeta Kappa’s CCD for 5 years, making the drive from Delaware to Ada at least once a week. Yet she reminds us frequently that the campus really isn’t as far away as we think it is, and our chapter is looking forward to our first ever road trip to Ada this spring to tour Zeta Kappa’s new suite and spend some time with the active members. In the midst of it all, our Lamplighter has three young legacy daughters at home, and remains energetic and positive in all of her involvement. Jackie is a role model not just for Delta Zetas, but for all women.

The Delaware Area Alumnae Chapter is excited to name Jackie Lapp-Lee as it’s first ever Lamplighter Award recipient!

Alumnae Chapter: Youngstown Area
Name of Recipient: Melissa Mastell Swantek
College Chapter: Kappa Chi, Youngstown State University

This alumna sister has given graciously of her time and is willingly helps when a request is made (especially from me). She participated in the planning meetings for State Day 2006 and was a presenter. Missy also helped out with this year’s Founders Day Dinner (and helped to cut my baking time in half). Missy is also supportive of several fundraisers for the chapter throughout the year (through my requests). Anna wants Missy to know: “its official” that the best part of this day is having this moment be shared with her DZ Big Sister and Little Sister. I am honored to pass this golden lamp to you that will keep the flame eternal for DZ and its sisterhood.

Congratulations to Melissa for being named the 2007 Youngstown Lamplighter Award Winner!

Congratulations and thank you to all our winners!
