The 2008 Olive McCune Loyalty Award Winner Olive McCune was a member of Alpha chapter in the early 1920s. She trained as a teacher and taught in the Cleveland area until she retired in the 1960s. She never married so her love for children was expressed in the elementary school classroom. I was a student in her 2nd grade classroom – and, because Olive and my mother were Delta Zeta sisters, she recruited me from 2nd grade onward! Miss McCune was a charter member of the Cleveland Alumnae chapter. She promoted Delta Zeta enthusiastically wherever she went. Her loyalty and dedication to Delta Zeta was contagious. She attended many national conventions and was loved by a wide network of Delta Zeta sisters. She lived in my parents’ home after she retired until her death. -Mella Cooks Davies, Great Lakes Area Alumnae Director
Pam Asher of the Kent Alumnae Chapter was chosen as the 2008 Olive McCune Loyalty Award Winner. Congratulations Pam! Pam has been a dedicated and loyal member of the Delta Zeta Sorority since the moment she stepped into our sisterhood. Pam was initiated into Gamma Kappa in January 1991. As an undergraduate, she served her chapter as House Manager, Vice President of New Member Education, Risk Manager, Awards Chairperson, Sorority Education and Ritual Chairperson. Upon graduation, Pam immediately joined the Kent Alumnae chapter. Her enthusiasm and desire to be involved resulted in her accepting the positions of Vice President and Collegiate Relations Chairperson. An opportunity to directly serve her home chapter in the sorority arose and she was elected to the office of Treasurer of the Gamma Kappa House Corporation in May of 1996, an office she held for 8 years. Little did she realize at the time that her skills would be such a great benefit to the collegiate sisters at Kent State University. Pam soon found herself doing double duty when she was appointed as CCD for Gamma Kappa. Pam enjoyed her years as advisor to the chapter. One of her favorite DZ memories is her first National Convention as CCD in 1998. This gave Pam a real opportunity to represent her home chapter but also see Delta Zeta Sorority on a grander stage. In 2005, the role of Regional Collegiate Coordinator for Region 5 became available and Pam was asked to take on the challenge. She gracefully accepted and continues in this role today. She travels all over the region supporting our young Delta Zeta women by conducting workshops and assisting individual chapter officers. She has been a tireless cheerleader for our sorority and has put on a positive face even in times of adversity. In the years since her college graduation with the work involved as House Corporation Treasurer, CCD and now RCC, Pam still continues to be active in the Kent Alumnae chapter, working in the kitchen during recruitment, attending business meetings and being involved with the senior workshop the alumnae chapter holds with the soon-to-be college graduate women. Pam was honored with the Kent Alumnae Chapter Lamplighter Award in 2003. Pam is married to Benjamin and has two young sons, Maxwell and Matthew. She holds a full time position in the import/export department of CPH Services Corp, a chemical company in Stow, OH. She also teaches Sunday school at My Temple in Hudson and enjoys scrap-booking.
